Parts of the new EU Batteries Regulation came into force in February 2024, with other changes coming it at later dates. The BTHA’s toy safety team created a fact sheet to help members with compliance.

After some further clarification we have made some changes to the BTHA Batteries Regulation fact sheet for the EU (only). Version 2 contains some amended dates for labelling in Annex I, table 1. The amendments are highlighted in yellow within the document.

The following labelling requirements have changed from 18th August 2024, to the 18th August 2026 which may be significant for some members.

  • Affix model identification and batch or serial number, or product number or element allowing identification on to the battery or where size or nature does not allow on packaging or document accompanying under Article 38 (6)
  • Add Manufacturers name and address and, if available web and e-mail address onto the battery or where not possible on packaging or document accompanying
  • Add Importers name and address and, if available web and e-mail address onto the battery or where not possible on packaging or document accompanying

Full members can view and download the fact sheet via the guidance section of the BTHA website – guidance, toy safety, batteries and accumulators.

The revised Batteries Regulation is difficult to interpret, if any members receive any information that may result in updates to this sheet they are asked to contact head of toy safety, Jerry Burnie.
